David Young’s first job in mortgage lending came in 1996, before he had finished high school. Working as a marketing assistant to a Los Angeles loan officer, he saw for the first time what a financing decision could mean to a family, and he never looked back.
The lesson wasn’t new to him. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Young learned the value of home ownership from his mother, who taught him early that owning a home is one of the most meaningful things a family can achieve. Three decades later, that belief still drives the way he works.
His real education came from his mentor, Jay Steren. Over 18 years at Steren’s firm, Mortgage Capital Associates, Young learned the business from every angle: how loans are structured, how files are built, and how lasting client relationships are earned. After Steren’s passing, Young founded One Nation Home Loans, and later The Young Group.
Along the way he has worked through three major rate cycles, periods when rates climbed sharply and then fell back. He never stepped away from the business, or from the clients who trusted him; many of those relationships now span decades. “Rates change. Markets turn,” Young says. “What lasts is doing right by people, and helping them own something they’re proud of.”
The Young Group reflects what those years taught him: no single loan officer masters every corner of lending. Young has drawn specialists from across the industry, in residential, commercial, portfolio and large-scale investment financing, who work under his direct oversight, so every client is matched with the expert their deal calls for.
And because the firm’s loans are processed, underwritten and funded through a correspondent lending channel rather than handed off to a wholesale lender’s queue, the team keeps control of the file from application to closing: the timelines, the communication and the outcome. For Young’s clients, and the realtors who refer them, that control is the point.
